 Engage in Professional Development

For competency 5, “Engage in Professional Development,” I have chosen a certificate from the 2022 INTESOL (Indiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference and my corresponding reflection as artifacts. This evidence of professional development exhibits an opportunity I had to visit with trained teachers of multilingual students and learn from their experiences. In this reflection I describe the sessions I visited, the information I gleaned from the speakers, and connect that information to a variety of educational literature from my graduate courses. After connecting appropriate literature in my reflection, I carefully consider how I could use the information I learned. This was an excellent experience; however, looking back, I would have chosen the professional development sessions more strategically in an effort to benefit the curriculum used for my students. Ultimately, this information helped me consider what I, as a teacher, was doing well. Now it allows me to continuously consider what is working in my classroom and how I can improve my instruction to students who are working to achieve their English proficiency.
